Rent by Cheque: Minto and GWLRA Updates

Updated: March 26, 2021

Minto

Update: Minto will continue to accept cheques, but asks that all tenants contact them prior to submitting their next one to ensure they are being filled out correctly.

Minto Rent Payment Changes - Although the HPTA has previously voiced its concerns about making rent payments with pre-authorized methods, it does recognize the efficiency, convenience and security provided by online banking; particularly when physical distancing is advised.

Minto tenants who currently pay their rent by cheque should be aware, however, that they are entitled to continue to do so despite the recent management notice (dated February 12, 2021) advising them that this will no longer be an option after April 1, 2021.

Current leases and the Residential Tenancies Act do not allow for a change of this nature to be made without consent of the tenant.

The HPTA has discussed this with Minto and will update members when a formal response is received. If you are a local tenant (66 Oakmount, 255 Glenlake or 111 Pacific) that has been told they cannot pay by cheque after the posting of this message, please reach out to us through the contact form on our website and we will assist as best we can.

GWLRA

Update: GWLRA Corporate Head offices have refused to delay the transition. Our recommendation below remains.

GWL tenants were told in January that cheques would no longer be accepted at the local rental office and would now need to be sent to their head office. While we believe this is permitted under the RTA, we have requested a deferral of the change until the conditions the pandemic have subsided.

Our current recommendation is to send post-dated cheques at your current rent amount to avoid postal delays.
